Closed Vs Open Rhinoplasty

There are two methods for rhinoplasty: Open Rhinoplasty and Closed Rhinoplasty. At Mi-Seoul, we get asked which is the superior method all the time. Which method should a patient choose? Well that depends on different factors and conditions. Read on to gain an understanding of the two techniques.

Open rhinoplasty involves using a horizontal at the collumela just below the tip. The nasal tissues are then lifted to allow the surgeon access to view and addresses the tip cartilages along with any concerning deficiencies. This exposure is particularly advantageous for the occasional rhinoplasty surgeon due to exposure of the nasal structure.

The tradeoff for open rhinoplasty is the external scar which, while generally heals well in most patients, some patients who are more prone of scarring may be left with a visible mark. Also, there is the uncertainty of how much tightening or contracture could take place during the healing.

The closed rhinoplasty, done entirely a small incision inside the nostril, does take greater manual dexterity and the technical knowledge to perform an operation “through a keyhole”. Experienced surgeons will tell you that their visualization is not impaired, and in fact, this approach of course has been used for nearly 100 years with great success.
